Stainless Steel Material Guide: 304 vs 430 vs 201 Cutlery
Choosing the right stainless steel grade is one of the most important decisions in a cutlery project. This guide compares 304 (18/10), 430 and 201 so you can pick the right material for your market, budget and brand.
304 vs 430 vs 201 At A Glance
| Grade | Key Strength | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 304 (18/10) | Excellent corrosion resistance | Luxury dining & home |
| 430 | Cost effective | Restaurant & hotel |
| 201 | Budget option | Mass market |
304 Stainless Steel (18/10)
Excellent corrosion resistance · Luxury dining & home
304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 10% nickel, which is why it is commonly called "18/10" stainless. The higher nickel content gives 304 excellent corrosion resistance, a bright and stable shine, and better resistance to rust and pitting even with regular contact with acidic foods and aggressive dishwashing.
Advantages
- ✓Excellent corrosion resistance
- ✓Bright, long-lasting mirror shine
- ✓Food-safe and hygienic
- ✓Resists rust and pitting
Considerations
- –Higher material cost
- –Slightly heavier pieces at the same gauge
430 Stainless Steel
Cost effective · Restaurant & hotel
430 stainless steel contains about 16-18% chromium with very little nickel. It offers good corrosion resistance for most food contact applications, holds a clean appearance, and is significantly more economical than 304. It is slightly magnetic and works well where heavy daily use is expected rather than high-gloss shine.
Advantages
- ✓Cost effective for volume orders
- ✓Good durability for commercial use
- ✓Dishwasher safe
- ✓Ideal for bulk hospitality programs
Considerations
- –Lower nickel content — less corrosion resistance than 304
- –Slightly less bright finish over time
201 Stainless Steel
Budget option · Mass market
201 stainless steel replaces part of the nickel with manganese and nitrogen, making it the most economical option in the cutlery range. It is suitable for promotional products, budget retail lines and mass-market flatware where price is the deciding factor. For most food-service or high-end programs, 304 or 430 is recommended.
Advantages
- ✓Lowest cost per piece
- ✓Suitable for mass-market retail
- ✓Good for promotional products
Considerations
- –Lower corrosion resistance
- –More prone to surface marks with heavy use
How To Choose The Right Material
